The 3 Types of Liposuction Surgery

As we start the New Year, many of us may feel that we haven’t achieved our fat loss goals and haven’t earned the right to wear that one bikini piece we’ve been eyeing. As frustrating as not achieving your fat loss goals can be, it is never too late to to lose some belly fat and get into the best shape of your life. The truth is every New Year, millions of people promise themselves that they will get back in shape, but research has shown that 91% of people that have New Year Resolutions have already given up on their goals by February. However, not all hope is lost. There is still light at the end of the tunnel. There are permanent solutions that will leave you turning heads and dropping jaws everywhere you go, such as…liposuction surgery.

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is an ideal solution for patients that have tried getting rid of areas of fat with diet and exercise but struggle to lose fat in specific areas. Most people have liposuction surgery of their arms, abdomen, axilla, back, waist, hips, sacrum, thighs, neck, male chest, buffalo hump and many more areas. Fat removal surgery is an excellent option for a lot of people. But how does Liposuction work exactly?

How does Liposuction work?

Dr. Michael Gray from Michigan Cosmetic Surgery Center and Skin Deep Spa explains that everyone has a limited number of fat cells. When fat gets stored in our body, the fat cells increase in size versus the body creating more fat cells.  These fat cells enlarge vs replicate.  95% percent of people have fat cells that are resistant to diet and exercise.  If you understand this process, this means that no matter how much you diet (unless you starve yourself) or exercise, these fat cells will not give up their fat.  These fat cells are doing a better job than other fat cells.  An eye doing a better job would “see” better.  An ear doing a better job would “hear” better.  A fat cell doing a better job would be the first to store and the last to give up. Thus, over time as we eat we start to call these areas of the body a “Problem” area.  The treatment of these “Problem” areas is to eliminate the fat cell.  Once gone, the problem is then solved.   Dr. Michael Gray can help restore your ideal body by removing as many of fat cells in the affected area so the fat doesn’t get stored in the area again. Dr. Gray focuses on 3 types of liposuction techniques to help you achieve your ideal body results.

External Ultrasonic Liposuction of Abdomen, Waist, Hips with Smartlipo MPX to Full Abdomen

External Ultrasonic Lipo and Smartlipo Abdomen

Technique # 1: External Ultrasonic Liposuction

With External Ultrasonic Assisted Liposuction, Dr. Gray first uses a hand piece to send ultrasonic sound waves through the skin. These ultrasonic sound waves help weaken the bonds between the fat cells so they are easier to remove. This is a very popular procedure due to not having to perform any incisions and the fat being removed through very small punctured holes placed in key areas in the skin.

Technique # 2: A New You’s The Perfect Lipo

The Perfect Lipo procedure is divided into 3 parts.

Part 1: Reduce and Weaken

Dr. Gray start by performing External Ultrasonic Assisted Liposuction (as explained above). EUAL consists of massaging ultrasonic (high frequency) sound waves over the skin and into the fat to weaken the bonds between the fat cells making it easier for removal. Smartlipo MPX can be used alone or in conjunction with External Ultrasonic Liposuction to further reduce and weaken the bonds between the fat cells. Once the cells are liquefied, we move to part 2.

Part 2: Smoothing

Right after External Ultrasonic Assisted Liposuction, Smart Lipo MPX/Cellulaze/Cellulize can be used to further reduce fat and to smooth cellulite in the operating room. Smart Lipo MPX works by using amplified laser light to reduce and smooth fat. The heat generated tightens the skin to improve your appearance. The remaining weakened fat cells will slowly bind back together (heal) within six weeks. During this time, fat can be molded and smoothed using a combination of Venus Legacy or VS in Dr. Gray’s office and Wellbox or Propower at home. Venus Legacy and VS use varying amounts of heat to tighten skin, sound waves to diminish swelling and mechanical components to smooth the fat. These machines have advanced technology to speed recovery with superior results than if left alone. Patients who participate in their recovery obtain better results.

Part 3: Tighten

After heating the skin with Smart Lipo MPX/Cellulaze/Cellulize, other procedures designed to heat the skin are applied. CO2 Repair or Fraxel, Halo, Thermage, Ultherapy, Vivace or Venus Legacy can be added to heat the surface and middle of the skin respectively. Additional heating procedures result in more tightening. When adding devices such as: CO2 Repair, Fraxel, Halo et al to heat the SURFACE of the skin in combination with devices that heat the MIDDLE Layers of skin ( Ultherapy or Thermage et al ) and Smart Lipo for the BOTTOM of skin, the skin tightening non-surgically is ultimately enhanced. Heating all three layers of the skin around the same time is more effective at tightening skin than one layer at a time.

Technique # 3: SmartLipo

Smart Lipo MPX uses a laser to decrease some fat, smooth cellulite, break up the bonds between fat cells,  and tighten skin. It works especially well on areas of fat that won’t respond to diet and exercise and is often combined with External Ultrasonic Assisted Liposuction to achieve optimal results. During Smart Lipo MPX, Dr. Gray uses a very small tube (2-3mm in diameter) that contains a fiber optic laser filament and inserts it under the skin through a small puncture hole. Amplified light energy is emitted from a laser at the tip while the filament is moved gently under the skin to vaporize fat cells, break the bonds between fat cells, heat the skin, and generate a shrink-wrap effect. The laser helps even out uneven fat globules (cellulite), divides uneven septa (another cause of Cellulite) and the heat generated causes a skin tightening effect. Because the filament is so small, Smart Lipo MPX can be performed under local anesthesia and is minimally invasive. The laser causes small blood vessels to coagulate immediately on contact so there is less bleeding, swelling, and bruising. It also allows for a quicker recovery time than conventional liposuction. This procedure does not require general anesthesia and can be performed under local anesthesia with or without EUAL.
