Protuberant and Herniated Nipple / Areola Complex: Overview
The way your nipple and areola looks can make a big difference in the overall appearance of your breasts. If they are herniated it means the areola is weak and the breast is bulging through to make the areola look puffy. Fortunately, with Dr. Gray’s techniques, he is able to treat the puffy areola.
Protuberant and Herniated Nipple / Areola Complex: Procedure
Repairing the puffy areola is a simple procedure that can be performed under local anesthesia. The procedure involves tightening the laxity of the areola musculature. This is done with a small circular incision around the border of where the dark areola meets the skin. During this procedure, the size of the areola can be enlarged, reduced or kept the same depending upon the patient’s desires.

After the procedure, patients can return to work the same day. Most feel minimal to no discomfort.
