If you’re tired of hiding your upper arms due to sagging skin or because you have big arms,  you’re not alone. Whether from weight loss, aging, excess fat or genetics, excess skin and large arms can make you feel self-conscious in clothing, photos, or everyday moments. For many people, non-surgical options just don’t offer enough improvement to the arms. That’s where arm tuck procedure or lipo-reduction comes in. We all know that working on the biceps or triceps only increases the size and that won’t slim down nor define your arms!

At Michigan Cosmetic Surgery Center and Skin Deep Spa, Dr. Michael W. Gray offers arm contouring procedures designed to restore a smoother, more defined upper arm shape. He’s been delivering incredible arm transformations to his patients for more than 30 years. If you’re considering an arm tuck or a reduction in the fat here’s what to really expect from these procedures through recovery and long-term results.

What Is an Arm Tuck?

Also known as brachioplasty, an arm tuck is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin (Inner Arm Tuck) or skin and fat (Posterior Arm Tuck) from the upper arms. It targets sagging or “bat wing” appearance that can occur with age, weight gain, and after significant weight loss. Even having large muscles and then through atrophy of these muscles from whatever cause can lead to loose skin in the upper arm. To solve these issues Dr. Gray offers a number of procedures that target different problems people may have.  Dr. Gray performs two primary techniques for excess skin vs excess skin and fat:

– Inner Arm Tuck: This approach hides the scar along the inner arm, running from the armpit to just above the elbow. It’s ideal for moderate sagging but only reduces the excess skin. This procedure is least desireable in the presences of fat as it tightens the skin around the fat you have.

– Posterior Arm Tuck: This places the scar toward the back of the arm, making it less visible in frontal views. It can be better for patients with more significant skin excess and for patients who wish a reduction in their skin and fat. Since most people have a volume issue and a skin issue that have issues with their upper arm, this procedure is more common than an inner arm tuck. However, the choice is always up to the patient which they want.

Each method is chosen based on your anatomy, how much is required meet a patients individual goals. Here are some of his before and after results.

Posterior Arm Tuck

Inner Arm Tuck
Inner Arm Tuck
Arm Tuck Posterior Incision
Inner Arm Tuck

What Happens During these procedures?

Dr. Gray performs the arm tuck procedure in his own out-patient surgical center using local or general anesthesia depending on the type of procedure and what is desired by the patient. The process includes:

– Carefully placed incisions (inner or posterior arm) if an arm tucks chosen vs small puncture holes to extract fat.

– Removal of excess skin or skin and fat based on the arm tuck chosen and Fat only if Lipo-Reduction.

– Tightening of the remaining skin is definitively performed with an Arm Tuck vs adding heating procedures (smart lips, Thermal, Ultherapy et al) to shrink skin when doing Lipo Reduction.

Depending on the patient, Dr. Gray may also use fat reduction procedures like External Ultrasonic Assisted Liposuction, Smart Lipo (Zerona and cool sculpt are also available to remove excess fat, especially if there is stubborn fat alongside loose skin.

What do you do if you want Fat and Skin reduced?

When a patient has both issues fat and skin then it is best to reduce as much fat first doing External Ultrasonic Assisted Lipo with the addition of Smart Lipo first.  If after the recovery and healing process the results meet the goals no further intervention would be needed,  If not the patient moves on to the second phase and chooses an Arm Tuck (Posterior or Inner)

Arm Tuck Recovery Timeline

Day 1 to 3: You’ll return home the same day as your procedure. Expect some swelling, tightness, and minimal if any discomfort. Dr. Gray will provide post-op instructions and prescribe medications to keep you comfortable.

Week 1 to 3: Compression garments will be worn to reduce swelling and support healing. You should limit lifting your arms above shoulder height, avoid any reaching or full extension of arms. Avoid strenuous activity or big arm movements for three weeks.

Week 4 and beyond : Most patients begin to resume daily activities. Swelling starts to subside and sutures dissolve.

You can usually return to full activity, including exercise. Swelling continues to decrease and the arms begin to reveal their contour.

What About Scars?

Scarring is a natural part of any surgery, but Dr. Gray uses refined techniques to minimize and discreetly place incisions. The use of TheraSCAR has proven to significantly reduce the risk poor scars and promotes a more rapid healing. Scars take a full 2 years to end their healing process in most people and thats when w can see the final scar. Whether it’s the inner or posterior approach, the goal is to make the scar less visible in everyday positions. TheraSCAR can be obtained from TheraSCAR.com

Over time, scars fade significantly. With proper post-op care including TheraSCAR, and sun protection, they often become flat and blend with the surrounding skin. Laser treatments or microneedling can further improve their appearance if desired.

What You Can Expect Long-Term

Patients typically see a dramatic change in the shape and size of their upper arms as the months go by and heeling progresses and swelling decreases. Sagging skin is removed, contour is optimized, and the arms look firmer and more youthful. These results are long-lasting, especially if you maintain a stable weight and healthy lifestyle.

You won’t just see the difference in photos or the mirror, you’ll feel it when wearing sleeveless clothes, raising your arms, or simply living more comfortably in your skin.
